Why Utah Has Garnered a Family-Friendly Reputation

    JustinBy JustinNovember 22, 2023Updated:November 22, 2023No Comments6 Mins Read

Reputations are hard to shake off once they’ve been established, especially on a topic such as how family-friendly a specific region of the U.S. is. People are always looking for the safest place to raise their children, and Utah has consistently been one of the more appealing places to people who have young ones.

To understand why the state has become synonymous with values and traditions, we have to determine what makes something family-friendly. A lack of violence is something that obviously matters to mothers and fathers around the nation. Religion is often perceived as a way to hand down positive values, and Utah is one of the most devout places on the planet.

Utah auto insurance is cheaper than the national average. This could mean the state is safer to drive in than others, encouraging parents to allow their teens a chance to learn how to drive without stress. We’ll talk about these topics and a few others to determine why Utah is considered wholesome.

    Crime Level in Utah

Utah has the 10th-lowest violence crime rate in the U.S. Homicide, sexual assault, and other acts of violence are all things parents worry about when they move to an area, and the statistics back up that Utah is a state which is one of the safest in the nation.

Just because crime rates are lower in Utah, it doesn’t mean violent acts don’t occur every so often. For example, a 13-year-old with autism was shot and killed by police in Utah by mistake in 2022. Anecdotal evidence will always prove there are stories that contradict the reputation of an area.

    Driving Statistics in Utah

Utah has the 14th-fewest driving fatalities in the country in 2022. This could be due to the lack of drivers on the road compared to bigger states, or it could be due to Utah drivers using safer cars because of the large number of children they bring with them in the vehicle.

The Honda Civic, Nissan Altima, and Chevrolet Silverado are some of the most sold vehicles in the state in the last year. These vehicles all work well in the snowy weather of the region and they have high safety standards.

Whatever the exact reasoning, the positive driving statistics for Utah also present people with lower insurance rates. Families struggling to pay the bills in other areas really appreciate the lower rates on car insurance and may be encouraged to move to the area for these discounts.

Drivers should try to maintain a clean driving record, not drink and drive, and follow all of the traffic laws to make sure their insurance rates stay low and the state remains a place families can feel comfortable driving in.

    Religion in Utah

Religion affects parenting in a number of ways. No matter what religion parents teach their children to follow, almost all creeds encourage people to love others, treat them with respect, and live with a specific set of values and principles that theoretically make the world a better place.

Whether religion actually does these things is an entirely different discussion, but the purpose of abiding by one is always supposed to be positive, therefore it’s an idea many parents really get excited about when they start to raise their families. Utah has one of the largest religious populations in the U.S.

As of now, 73% of Utah residents identify as Christian. 55% of those Christians identify as part of the Mormon branch of the religion. This high rate of religious devotion is a significant factor in influencing other religious people to move to the state, especially if they are part of the Mormon faith.

People who identify as Mormon are proven on average to have more children than those who aren’t Mormon. This influx in birth rates in the region is another reason why people on the outside thinking about moving there might think of the state as family-friendly.

Parents with large families have to put a lot of time and effort into their children, which fuels the state’s notoriety as filled with people who put family first.

    LGBTQ+ Rights in Utah

One of the issues working against Utah’s family-friendly reputation is its lack of LGBTQ+ diversity. The Mormon faith has a strong adherence to heterosexual norms in society and the religion doesn’t believe same-sex marriage is approved by their deity.

This strict requirement to build a traditional, straight relationship before having children is something that used to be viewed as family-friendly in many places. As more people around the world start to accept queer people, Utah’s reputation is starting to sour amongst progressive people and families who have LGBTQ+ children.

    Schooling in Utah

Parents want their kids to do well in school. Utah is one of the higher-ranked states in the country when it comes to many different educational categories. Utah ranks as the sixth-most successful state in the nation for post-secondary education according to USNews.com. They rank as the 21st most successful state in Pre-K through 12th-grade education.

The criteria for these rankings are never made completely clear, but things like state testing scores and graduation rates are among the factors contributing to these rankings. Once students get to college, they often go to Brigham Young University, known as BYU, which is one of the colleges in the U.S. with a very high reputation for success.

Schooling also is tied to the potential for getting a job, and the unemployment rate in Utah is tied for the second-lowest in the country. Parents have the peace of mind that their child, statistically, has a great chance of finding a career that will support them and eventually support future generations well into their adulthoods.

    The Overall Perception of Utah

Utah is a state with a family-friendly reputation that will likely continue to endure due to its high devotion to religion, low cost of living, fewer violent crimes compared to the rest of the nation, and variety of quality schools.

Parents have to decide whether or not these things matter the most, or whether topics like a lack of diversity in Utah make the other items feel hollow. Like living anywhere else in the world, moving to Utah is entirely a personal preference.
