From Antioxidants to Relaxation: The Health Benefits of Drinking Tea

    JustinBy JustinMay 29, 2024Updated:February 28, 2025No Comments6 Mins Read

Low-lift, simple-to-implement behaviors that anybody can include in their everyday life are my favorite regarding healing and overall wellness. Provide me with activities to do when I’m extremely exhausted, unwell, and don’t want to spend money.

Making a cup of tea is a beautiful ritual that may help you settle into your nightly routine, start your morning, and find peace throughout a hectic day. My cup of tea in the morning and my mug of night tea in the evening have turned into priceless daytime rituals. It’s fresh ginger and lemon tea when I feel under the weather. We may slow down and savor the present by incorporating tea into our daily routine. It was the cherry on top when I realized that tea has health advantages.

After learning that I had cancer, I looked for every food and beverage that would aid in my recovery and stop the disease from coming back. According to the Beverage Guidance Panel’s ranking, tea is the second healthiest beverage after water and is tied with coffee (! praise be). Suddenly, my tea collection became even more significant. I began studying more before trying to find premium teas that would benefit my health.

Herbal or caffeinated teas include micronutrients called polyphenols, which function as antioxidants and reduce our risk of contracting most chronic illnesses. Because the tea plant contains powerful antioxidants and phytonutrients, several teas are essential to your wellness or healing program.

Teas have been demonstrated to boost immunity, reduce the risk of heart disease and cancer, postpone the beginning of diabetes-related mortality, and protect the brain against stroke and cognitive decline. In addition, tea has anti-inflammatory properties that lower blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, and body fat. It may assist in reducing seasonal allergy symptoms. Most teas also include smaller quantities of beneficial minerals like potassium, phosphorus, magnesium, and zinc.

For tea choosing, less processing is preferable (this is my usual rule of thumb for anything ingestible). This suggests that some of the health benefits of anything processed, decaffeinated, or powdered may be lost. You should also avoid adding creamers, dairy milk, or processed sugar to your tea. If desired sweetness is added, a small amount of honey or maple syrup can be added. Buying Body Balance tea is a good choice if you want to improve your health because it can improve your general well-being and offer additional benefits.

Top 5 Health Benefits of Drinking Tea

Tea is a great alternative for water since it is pleasant and hydrating, but it also has nutrients and minerals that are healthy for your health.

Although tea cannot be used as a treatment or cure for any illness, it is a simple addition to a balanced diet. These are some significant health advantages of tea.

    1. Improve Cardiovascular Health

Research indicates that regular tea drinking may lower the risk of heart disease; this is likely primarily because tea contains polyphenols. The catechins in green tea, which are present in very high concentrations and have a beneficial impact on all cardiovascular outcomes, are especially noteworthy.

    2. Alter Glucose Response

Tea polyphenols limit digestion and absorption while increasing the release of insulin, which helps regulate our body’s reaction to carbs. In this context, green tea seems to be the most beneficial. Additionally, a berberine supplement can complement this effect by improving insulin sensitivity and further supporting healthy blood sugar levels.

    3. Lower Chance of Diabetes

Some studies have concluded that a consistent intake of dietary polyphenols over a lifetime may be as effective as medication in reducing the risk of diabetes due to tea polyphenols’ ability to inhibit digestive enzymes like lactase and delay the uptake of glucose (sugar) in the gut; however, more research is required.

    4. Lower the Danger of Cancer

Tea polyphenols can potentially suppress the growth of some cancers in conjunction with other variables. Nevertheless, there is now just strong evidence for oral cancer; there is data that suggests different types of cancer, such as liver, breast, and colon cancer, may exist. More well-planned research is required, and other variables that can affect these results also need to be considered.

    5. Increased Sleep Quality and Decreased Depression Risk

A few teas, like chamomile, are drunk in the evening to aid in relaxation and promote better sleep. Additionally, it has been discovered that chamomile tea improves sleep quality and lessens depression in postpartum mothers.

What Effect Does the Addition of Sugar or Milk Have on the Health Advantages of Tea?

The effects of adding milk to black tea are not well-established; however, it may impact our absorption of the healthful polyphenols and reduce the beverage’s cardiovascular advantages. However, other research indicates that milk is irrelevant and that the secret to reaping these advantages may lie in the length of the infusion.

Moreover, it seems that increasing the amount of milk in tea seems to have a greater effect on l-theanine levels than reducing the amount of sugar and milk. Sugar added to hot beverages, such as tea, is considered “free sugar,” which is the kind we should limit. It might also affect how well we absorb polyphenols; research indicates that stevia would be a better option if you prefer your tea sweetened because it doesn’t interfere with the availability of these healthy ingredients.

    Is Decaffeinated Tea Healthy?

If you like the taste and experience of tea but are sensitive to caffeine, you might try decaffeinated tea. Conventional teas typically contain half the caffeine of coffee and even less if they are steeped for a shorter period of time.

There are various ways to decaffeinate tea. Most of the polyphenols in tea are also eliminated by one method that uses an organic chemical solvent (methylene chloride or ethyl acetate). There is very little to no chemical left behind after processing, and no adverse health consequences have been reported in studies. Another technique, “effervescence,” keeps most polyphenols using carbon dioxide and water. In both cases, the chemical or gas is applied to wet tea leaves, where it forms a bond with the caffeine. When the leaves dry, the solvent or gas and caffeine both evaporate. You can find out which processing method is employed by contacting the manufacturer or looking at the label on the package.

    Final Thoughts

Tea can be a part of a healthy eating pattern, but additional research is needed to determine all of its benefits. Steep your own tea for maximum potency, and watch how it is sweetened to minimize extra sugar sources.
